My creative writing process

“You can always edit a bad page. You can’t edit a blank page.”

-  Jodi Picoult

This quote resonated with me especially when I first began to write. I just started with the story in my head and continued to build on it. I found though that once I started, I couldn’t stop.  I wasn’t concerned with grammar or punctuation, that could be fixed at a later date.  What was crucial to me was that I got the story down while it was present in my head. I didn’t use an outline, instead what I did was create a list of characters that I continuously kept track of and expanded upon. Interestingly enough, I felt like I knew this story well; I got the idea years earlier while driving by a community next to one of the Freeways in Los Angeles and saw a couple of boys sitting on a fence watching the traffic go by.

Ironically when I look back at ay my process for these first two books I didn’t have blank pages or writers block.  I got up every morning writing while the story flowed.  I found the inner me in The Wishing Fence and went with it.
